Safety guidelines for building circuits at home:
PARENTS MUST SUPERVISE KIDS!
A parent/adult must be at home/same location as the student(minor) and supervise them when they build electronics at home following the online instructions from the Circuits2Robotics course.
Parents of minor students- please read the following guidelines and acknowledge:
As with all small items - care must be taken to keep small parts away from small children and pets. Electronic components can be choking hazards for small children and pets. Please secure components and small parts safely.
Never use rechargeable batteries of any kind! Lithium ion, nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium - all these cells/batteries have extremely high current capacities and are not safe.
Only use regular alkaline cells (single use type) such as common Duracell or Energizer or equivalent) in AA, C, or D size. Do not use cells larger than D size.
Do not mix old and new batteries.
Do not attempt to charge single use batteries.
At the end of the session - parents must supervise disconnection of batteries from the circuit. Pack away batteries safely - away from the circuit.
We will work with 3-6V DC voltages.
Kids should not attempt to use household mains / AC power.
Even with 3-6V DC circuits using alkaline (single use) cells, if a component is left on for too long - such as a motor, or if there is a short circuit, it can lead to components heating up and risk of a fire.
The battery should be the last component to be connected in the circuit.
In case of any burning smell or smoke, or any heating or wires that feel hot - disconnect the batteries immediately.
Never allow the terminals of the battery to be directly connected to each other - this is a short circuit and can cause heating and fire.
Do not leave powered circuits unattended. Disconnect the battery from the circuit by removing it from the holder and securing it, even if you were to step away only for even a short time.
If the circuit is not working as expected, disconnect the battery before attempting to troubleshoot.
Please note: A parent will need to be around when kids build circuits during the remote workshop.
Once you are ready to pack up after working on your circuits, make sure you run through these checks:
Disconnect the battery from the circuit, do not leave the circuit connected.
Parents should ensure that cells (batteries) are removed from their holders at the end of the session, and stored safely.
The above guidelines must be followed to provide a safety while building/testing electronics at home.
